Well I'm delighted to inform those of you who don't already know that we had a very successful trip to Portugal last week. It was the fifth annual Ryder Cup match versus Knutsford GC and Hale ended up winning making the overall score in the series 3:2 in our favour. Each side has 16 players and we play the match over three days in fourballs. For the first nine holes we play fourball betterball matches and then on the second nine we play singles matches, with the two lower handicap players playing one another. On the final day we play for double points to keep the competition wide open. Hale won all three days: the score on day one was 12.5-11.5, day two was 14.5-9.5 and the final day was 27-21 making the overall score 54-42.
There were some excellent performances with rookies Tony Bray and Tom Griffiths plus the veteran Ryder Cupper Richard Duerr was undefeated for the week. John Webb won five out of six games and Peter Veitch, after a slow start on day one, won all his final four games. Poor Martin Bramwell was poorly for day two so Martin Oldfield had to take on two Knutsford players, one over the front nine and one over the back nine. He won both games to secure legendary Ryder Cup status comfortably knocking Seve and Olazabal off their perches!
The match is played in a great spirit and we all come away from the trip having strengthened our friendships with our fellow members and having made new friends with the Knutsford side. Thanks again everyone for taking part and all the well wishers who cheered us on from the sidelines. The photos below show me receiving the trophy from Knutsford pro Tim Maxwell, the 32 of us before flying home on the final day and the trophy back where it belongs in pride of place in the Pro Shop..... Before it gets knocked down, more on that shortly!
Last Thursday, Terri Broadbent won the 7 Hole Ladies Stableford competition with 18 points.
Players were entitled to use up to two mulligans but Terri didn't use any and still won, now there's confidence for you!
Second place with 15 points was Diana Hogben beating Pam Dixon on a card playoff. The good news for Pam though was that she got a birdie on the seventh hole.
Apologies to David Gill for not including his photo last week following his victory in the Winter Stableford on Saturday 28th January.
Here he is pictured with the Captain at the presentation afterwards.
Here is a photo of my new home from Monday onwards when the work commences on the clubhouse extension. It's secure, warm and bijou so it's going to be business as usual so please continue to pop in over the course of the 16 week building project.
Whilst I'm in the Porta Cabin, please remember I'll have lots of stock that you just won't be able to see and other items which will be off site.
So just ask me if there is some product or products that you require. If I don't have the items then please also remember that I can get a hold of pretty well any golfing item very quickly at super competitive prices. So the message is try me first before going elsewhere - you'll probably be pleasantly surprised as I'm often cheaper than the competition anyway.
Finally there are two nine irons by the filing cabinet opposite the gents loos which have been there for some time. One is a Callaway and one is a Jaxx and both are right handed as per the photo below. Please collect them ASAP if either is yours otherwise they will need to be retired to that great big golf course in the sky!
